Twitter announced that users will soon be able to post ‘tweets’ with photos & video. This means that users will be able to add videos & pictures when they add tweets which will be viewable via the Twitter homepage rather than being redirected to other websites such as YouTube & Flickr. This is a major advance as previously Twitter was restricted by only allowing tweets with a brief line of text and as we all know a lot more can be said with an image or a short video clip.
A large number of people currently use alternative sites to view Twitter content that already offer video & images in this way, however the founder of Twitter, ‘Biz Stone’ informs us that up to 78% of twitter account holders currently access tweets directly from the Twitter site.
This is great news for those who have images or videos that they want to share with the world and has direct implications for
SEO too, as being able to attract more interest and re-tweets of your content using media is a major step forward. Companies can promote new products & services by tweeting images and video clips and because video can so easily be created with mobile phones handsets now-a-days, users can upload videos & images straight to Twitter.
So the owners of ecommerce websites will be able to post tweets about new products that they are adding to their sites making them available to Twitter users which will increase interest in their site and ultimately sales. Those companies who offer services which they currently promote via their websites will now be able to take advantage of another avenue of promotion by tweeting about their services with images & video.
This is not to say that using images & video and social media alone can be affective in improving website search engine optimisation as carefully written text content is needed in each tweet. The text has to be written with proper keyword focus in order for tweets to be picked up in search engines such as Google, Yahoo & Bing.
