Outlook 2007 Setup Guide

Outlook 2007 is a widely used email client, capable of handling several different protocols for email, news feeds and more. This guide demonstrates how to configure Outlook 2007 for a POP email account.

Prerequisites

In order to configure a POP email account you need to have established the following settings, specific to your account:

  • Email Address
  • Account Type
  • Incoming Server Address
  • Outgoing Server Address
  • Outgoing Server Authentication (if any)
  • User Name
  • Password

Walkthrough

From the menu along the top of Outlook, select ‘Tools’ then ‘Account Settings’

In the new window, select ‘New’ from the row of options.

By default the first option should be selected, labelled ‘Microsoft Exchange, POP3, IMAP, or HTTP’, with that option selected, click the ‘Next’ button to proceed.

Do not fill the first form, instead select ‘Manually configure server settings or additional server types’ and click the ‘Next’ button.

Ensure the ‘Internet E-Mail’ option is selected and click ‘Next’

Complete each of the fields in this form using the account information specified above

Whatever you enter into the ‘Your Name’ field will be displayed to your recipients. The email address setting is used when Outlook sends an email as your from address.

Ensure that POP3 is selected from the drop down menu and enter your incoming and outgoing server addresses.

Under ‘Login Information’ complete the ‘User Name’ and ‘Password’ fields. Leave the ‘Remember Password’ checkbox ticked. In the vast majority of cases your account does not require ‘Secure Password Authentication’. These credentials are used to authenticate with your incoming server.

If your outgoing server requires authentication, click the ‘More Settings’ button to the lower right of the form.

Select the ‘Outgoing Server’ tab and tick the ‘My Outgoing Server Requires Authentication’ checkbox. If your outgoing server is expecting the same username and password as your incoming server you can select the ‘Use same settings as my incoming server’ option otherwise select the ‘Log On Using’ option and enter the user name and password. Click the ‘OK’ button to confirm these settings and return to the main ‘Add new e-mail account’ window.

At this stage you may wish to test the settings you have entered, Click the ‘Test Account Settings’ button to do so. Outlook will attempt to log on to your incoming server and send a test message to your email address.

Click the next button to confirm these settings.

Once the congratulations message is shown click ‘Finish’.
